If you confirmed orders before shipping

Most RTO is avoidable: wrong numbers, second thoughts, and orders that were never serious. Asking the customer to confirm before dispatch catches those while they still cost you nothing.

How this is calculated

Every returned parcel costs you four things: the shipping you paid to send it, the shipping to bring it back, the packaging you can't reuse, and the profit you would have made had it been delivered. The stock itself usually comes back sellable, so we don't count it as lost — but it has been tied up for a week or two, which is its own cost.

Numbers are estimates in whatever currency you entered. Adjust the inputs to match your own courier rates — the defaults are just a starting point.

Common questions

What is RTO?

Return To Origin — a parcel that goes out for delivery and comes back because the customer refused it, couldn't be reached, or never really intended to buy. It's the main cost of selling cash on delivery.

What's a normal RTO rate?

It depends on your market and category, but sellers commonly report 15–40% of COD orders coming back. Fashion and impulse purchases sit at the higher end; considered, higher-value purchases lower.

How do you actually reduce it?

Confirm the order before you dispatch it, on a channel the customer reads. In COD markets that means WhatsApp, not email. An unconfirmed order is far more likely to be refused at the door — and a cancellation before dispatch costs you nothing but a message.
