WhatsApp COD confirmation for Shopify — without getting your number banned
Cash-on-delivery merchants lose real money to fake orders and refused deliveries. WhatsApp confirmation fixes it — if you pick a tool that won't cost you your WhatsApp number.
The COD problem, in numbers
If you sell cash on delivery — in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the Gulf,
Southeast Asia, anywhere COD is how customers buy — you already know the
failure mode: the courier arrives, the customer doesn't answer, changed
their mind, or never existed. You pay the delivery fee both ways, the
product spends two weeks in transit, and industry return-to-origin rates
for unconfirmed COD orders run 20–30%.
The fix is old and proven: confirm the order before you ship
it. Calling every customer doesn't scale. WhatsApp does — reply
rates dwarf email, and in COD markets it's the app every customer already
has open.
Why COD confirmation apps get merchants banned
Here's what most merchants discover too late. There are two completely
different ways an app can send WhatsApp messages for you:
- The unofficial way: the app asks you to "link a
device" — scanning a QR code with your own WhatsApp, exactly like
WhatsApp Web. The app then puppets your personal or business number
through an automation layer. This violates WhatsApp's terms of service.
Meta's detection systems look for automated sending patterns, and when
they find them, they ban the number — permanently, with no appeal
path. Read the one-star reviews of the popular COD apps on the
Shopify App Store: "my number got banned" appears again and again.
For a merchant whose customer relationships live on that number, it's a
business amputation.
- The official way: the WhatsApp
Business Platform — Meta's own API for business messaging. Messages
are sent from a registered WhatsApp Business Account through Meta's
infrastructure, using message templates Meta has approved. There is
nothing to detect and nothing to ban: this is the sanctioned channel,
the one Meta wants businesses on.
The one question to ask any WhatsApp app before installing:
"Do I connect through the official WhatsApp Business API, or do I scan a
QR code to link my own WhatsApp?" If the answer involves a QR code,
your number is the collateral.
What to look for in a COD confirmation app
- Official WhatsApp Business API — non-negotiable, per the above.
- Confirm/Cancel buttons, not just text — one-tap replies triple response rates versus "please reply YES".
- Your customers' language — an English message to a Sinhala-, Tamil-, Hindi-, Urdu- or Arabic-speaking customer reads like spam. Confirmation rates follow the language.
- Automatic follow-up — a reminder for non-responders, and a clear "expired" state so unconfirmed orders never ship by accident.
- Honest pricing — per-order fees on top of Meta's conversation charges add up; flat plans keep COD margins predictable.
- A dashboard that shows the savings — orders confirmed, orders cancelled before you paid a courier.
How OrderPing does it
OrderPing is built by Infinitx Labs on the
official WhatsApp Business API only — there is no QR-code mode, by design.
New COD orders trigger a confirmation with Confirm/Cancel buttons in
English, Sinhala, Tamil, Hindi, Urdu, or Arabic; non-responders get one
reminder; unconfirmed orders expire visibly. Shipment updates with
tracking links work for every order, prepaid included. It's launching
soon on the Shopify App Store with a free plan.
