Overview
AuroraKIDS helps young children learn to read and speak in Sinhala and English — letters, vocabulary, sentences, and stories — through forgiving, voice-led games. It's built privacy-first: no accounts, no ads, no tracking. Everything a child does stays on their device.
01 The challenge
- An under-served, complex script. Sinhala has rich letterforms and vowel signs, and very few quality kids' apps handle it well — both visually and in pronunciation.
- Pre-readers need voice, not text. The whole experience had to be audio-led, encouraging, and impossible to "get wrong" in a discouraging way.
- Kids' privacy is non-negotiable. Children's apps face strict rules (COPPA, GDPR-K) and heavy store scrutiny — the architecture had to collect nothing.
- High-quality voice, offline & instant. Natural neural speech is normally an online, paid service — but a kids' app needs it to work on a plane, instantly, every time.

03 Under the hood
The interesting engineering — and the parts that make it store-ready for a kids' audience:
- Offline neural voice. Pronunciation is generated with Microsoft Azure's neural text-to-speech, then permanently cached on the device. The first time a letter or word is heard it downloads once; after that it plays instantly, fully offline.
- Privacy by design. No accounts, no logins, no analytics on children. All progress is local. Compliant with COPPA and GDPR-K, and structured for Google Play's Families & Apple's Kids requirements.
- Careful localization. Native review of Sinhala wording, tense and vowel signs — so the language is correct and natural, not machine-literal.
- One codebase, both platforms. Built with React Native / Expo to ship iOS and Android together.
- Clean monetization & reliability. A one-time premium unlock via RevenueCat, and anonymous crash reporting (Sentry) in production only — never in development, never with child data.
